Ignorance ain’t always bliss

I was amused to read today about Philip the Fair of France, who in 1301 arrested the bishop of Pamiers for having likened the good king to an owl … ‘the handsomest of birds which is worth absolutely nothing.’  Bishop Saisset was charged with treason, but he should also have been charged with extreme idiocy as everyone knows that owls are necessary to keep vermin under control.

I suppose the bishop was on the receiving end of that lesson.
