Not-so-Innocent Legacy

I just want to slap Pope Innocent III upside the head whenever I read about the Albigensian Crusades and, in particular, the annihilation at Béziers.  The city of Béziers was not only a safe haven for Cathars, but many Catholics resided there as well.  There is a famous line, attributed to the papal legate Arnaud Amalric:  Kill them all, God will know his own.

I certainly hope that God remembered this when Amalric’s black soul approached the pearly gates in 1225.
