My boss is on vacation this week, but yesterday sent me a series of Wild Turkey-inspired texts, one of which extolled the virtues of an iPhone app he’d downloaded, Shazam.
In brief, one taps on a button labeled ‘Tag’, holds the phone so that the microphone is pointed toward a speaker through which music plays, and the application identifies the tune.
I downloaded the free version, tried it on 9 songs, and 7 were identified, all correctly. For one of these 7, the sample collected was a strictly instrumental portion of a tune which does have vocals. The two not identified were clearly labelled in such a way as to inform me that a match was not found.
I was impressed with the result, and the price was a bonus.
