The movie on my return flight was Won’t Back Down. The in-flight magazine described it as
A pair of determined mothers risk everything to transform their children’s failing inner city school.
It sounded boring and formulaic so listened to tunes on my iPod instead.
But every so often my eyes were, naturally, drawn to the screen and I could imagine the dialogue. And yes, it looked as boring and formulaic as the description.
Predictably, Maggie Gyllenhaal plays a quirky-yet-trashy underachieving single mom. To her credit I have seen Gyllenhaal in several films and she plays this sort of character well. But I am sorry to see her typecast, even if it is the result of self-selection, and harbor a (possibly strange) desire to see her play a real estate mogul.
